SANCTUARY CITIES: A
There were near 500 sanctuary cities in the United States that ignored federal law when it came to prosecuting illegal immigrants as Donald Trump was sworn in as President. He had campaigned against sanctuary cities promising to dismantle them. Sanctuary cities not only ignore federal law but they also help enable countless incidents of human trafficking as well as deaths in tractor trailers. What actions has President Trump taken to keep his promise so far?
First we need to understand what a sanctuary city is? In the United States a sanctuary city is a city that has adopted a policy of protecting illegal Immigrants by not prosecuting them for violating federal immigration and criminal laws in the country in which they are currently living illegally.
1/24/17: Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at cracking down on so-called “sanctuary cities,” which limit cooperation between state and local law enforcement and federal immigration agents. It follows through on his campaign-trail promise to withhold federal dollars from such cities, which might jeopardize support for services including education, health care, and housing for millions of American citizens. This was a simple A grading. How is it possible that anyone, American citizen or illegal immigrant, not be prosecuted for laws they have broken?
9/28/17: ICE arrested hundreds of immigrants in 'sanctuary cities' around the nation including California. Overall, ICE said it arrested nearly 500 people across the country over the last few days. According to ICE, "Operation Safe City" focused on cities and regions where "ICE deportation officers are denied access to jails and prisons to interview suspected immigration violators or jurisdictions where ICE detainers are not honored."
3/9/18: Trump DOJ sues California over 'interference' with immigration enforcement. The Trump Justice Department filed a lawsuit against California, saying three recently-passed state laws were deliberately interfering with federal immigration policies.
